30/09/10 New Live Guided By Voices Performances

For me, two of the most important bands of the 90s were Pavement and Guided By Voices.  Pavement has already started touring, and even played Fallon and Colbert, and now Guided By Voices have returned to the stage and are playing together.

Last night the band played at the Palladium Showroom in Dallas and played two hours worth of classic GBV songs.  As evidenced by the great performance of Game of Pricks, Guided by Voices still sound great even as they have aged.  Although they were notorious for having sloppy live performances these videos sound like GBV prime on their albums Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes.  Below is the much loved Bee Thousand track Tractor Rape Chain, which they included in their set.

Phenomenal.

30/09/10 Video: Local Natives- Wide Eyes

Fantastic video for a fantastic song.  The video follows a person trying to deal with an evil shark who follows him everywhere.  The band members also make appearances in the video so watch out for them.

30/09/10 G-Eazy – Waspy (Feat. Tennis)

When I first listened to Tennis’ blissful track, “Marathon”, the thought of someone flipping it into a rap beat and dropping lines like “Her booty ain’t that fat, but her wallet is”over it never crossed my mind.  Though, surprisingly enough, with a second set of drums thrown on, “Marathon” works pretty well as a rap beat.  G-Eazy probably isn’t the ideal guy to rap over said beat, but I’ll give him the credit for beat selection, its always cool to see how close the indie rock and hip-hop worlds are growing lately.

29/09/10 Deerhunter – He Would Have Laughed

This is a song off of Deerhunter’s recent album Halcyon Digest, which, for me, was one of the most refreshing releases of the year.  As the indie world is being engulfed by synthed out lo-fi bands, some good and some terrible, Deerhyunter chose not to jump onto this trend.  Halcyon Digest is accoustic (at least relatively), and not necessarily experimental at all, which leaves room for the band’s real strong point to shine, their song writing.  Every song on the album, whether 2 minutes long or 7, is entertaining throughout, without any gimmicks of originality that lose their novelty after two or three listens.  One of my favorite songs on Halcyon Digest was “He Would Have Laughed” which you can stream below.

29/09/10 The Roots and John Legend Cover Wake Up

The Roots have steadily been gaining my attention as they continue to collaborate with great independent artists.  They share a love for Dirty Projectors and now they have worked with John Legend to produce this great cover.  Although this lacks the pure energy and intensity of Arcade Fire’s version it is still cool to see this cross blending of genres.

29/09/10 Kanye West – Lost In The World (Feat. Bon Iver)

I’m still not used to the fact that Bon Iver and Kanye West make music together.  Every time I hear Justin Vernon’s voice come in a Kanye song I go into minor shock, not to say that it doesn’t work well.  I wasn’t sure about the collaboration when I heard Vernon’s part in “Monster”, but on this track the two artists’ styles work really well together.  This song is Kanye’s expansion on Bon Iver’s “The Woods” which until now, I didn’t realize sounded so much like something that could fit so well in 808’s and Heartbreaks.  Stream and download below…

29/09/10 Album Review: No Age- Everything In Between

California noise-rockers No Age hit gold with their 2008 album Nouns.  Nouns is a masterpiece of noise-rock and punk-rock that captured the feel of an entire scene with its love for experimentation, aggression and volume.  No Age is back with their third full-length Everything in Between.  Check out my full review after the jump.

28/09/10 Video: Male Bonding- Weird Feelings

The video for garage-rock band Male Bonding’s Weird Feelings live up to the songs title.  The band is definitely surrounded by lots of weird and uncomfortable things that even give the viewer weird feelings.  Even if you aren’t a fan of the video, just try not to get hooked to this song during the opening verse.

28/09/10 Video: Duck Sauce- Barbra Streisand

After reading that the name of this song is Barbra Streisand, and that the band is called Duck Sauce, do I need to give you more incentive to check it out?  Well  I will anyway.  Duck Sauce is a vintage vinyl mashing collaboration project between Armand Van Helden and A-Track.  This video has appearances from Pharell, Questlove, Chromeo, Ezra Koenig and even Kanye West.  So yes, this is a fantastic video.
