SBTRKT is one of the biggest forces in bass music right now, so it’s no surprised that the producer-centric blogosphere is going crazy over his latest leak ‘Gamelena’. Working more as an announcement that he’s working in the studio again than as a proper single, ‘Gamelena’ shows off some experimenting and tinkering coming from SBTRKT. With the bird chirps and the low croaking bass thrown in the mix, ‘Gamelena’ sounds like an electronic jungle at times… which is just as cool as it sounds. If this track really is just a teaser to what he has coming up, his next release is set to be great.

Ra Cailum’s last EP was the stunning, sleeper-hit ‘Finding My Way’ EP which was one of my favorites from last year. Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I saw that Ra Cailum dropped a new 3-track EP with Oakland-based Mapzzz. On the release, Ra Cailum fully embraces the bass-heavy, footwork vibe that he’s been experimenting with on some of the singles he’s dropped. The three tracks don’t rely heavily on vocal samples as Ra Cailum lets his incredible beat-work take center stage. So many producers these days are constructing tracks with warped Aaliyah or Beyonce samples (not saying it’s such a bad thing) so it’s refreshing to hear Ra Cailum’s more stripped-down approach to his beat making. I’ve heard a lot of bass music in the past year, yet, heRobust has managed to make a sound that not only stands out from the rest but also makes me amazed by a genre I’ve never really been that into. Somehow I let this release slip by when it dropped on the 1st, however, with music this good there is no time too late to hop on the hype-train. Let’s be honest, anyone can be a DJ these days and start to make crappy brostep beats on FL Studio. heRobust is not one of those artists.
The first 30-seconds of his track ‘Facebook Lift’ show off an enormous amount of talent with a drop that would make any basshead go crazy. We are lucky enough to have two releases from the artist via Saturate Records, Late Night and Morning After. As the titles suggest, Late Night is the bass and grove heavy EP while Morning After is a much more downtempo and chilled-out affair. The two releases are perfect complements to each other and together have made heRobust easily one of my favorite producers making music now (also you can download them both for free here!).
