The Up-Turn

@TheUpTurnMusic /

I am really thankful that Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn’s collaborative relationship didn’t end with those two songs on Plastic Beach.  Sly & The Family Stone has always been one of my favorite bands, so I am admittedly a sucker for some well-executed old-school soul vocals, and there’s no doubt Bobby Womack has just that.  But the idea of a Bobby Womack album backed entirely by electronic production made me a little nervous.  There are only a select few artists who can switch styles so distinctly without missing a step (ie. Gil-Scott Heron, David Byrne), and luckily Bobby Womack happens to be one of these.  Guided by Damon Albarn on the production end, “Please Forgive My Heart” has a beautifully understated instrumental that maintains the soulful energy of Womack’s past work, while staying extremely modern.  Womack is releasing his album The Bravest Man In The Universe (entirely produced by Damon Albarn) on XL Records, who have become really good at this type of thing, in early June.  I am extremely excited.
