Most people who only know Tyler for his most famous tracks like “Yonkers” and “French” get the idea that he is a diabolical character who is only interested in offending people, and though that is definitely part of who he is, if you’ve heard tracks like “Analog” you know that there’s another side to him.  That side really comes out in this mix where Tyler takes the alias of DJ Stankdaddy, and puts together a truly great mix of sunny R&B, Indie rock, and hip-hop tracks from the likes of Erykah Badu, Smith Westerns, N*E*R*D, T.I., and more, divided by absurd interuptions from DJ Stankdaddy that only add to the mix’s care-free feel.  The mix is extremely enjoyable, but is also interesting because it really does paint a picture of all of the different influences that make up Tyler’s sound.  For now you can download the over-an-hour-long track via the link below, and hopefully later we will be able to stream on soundcloud.

For better or for worse, this track isn’t directly about dookie, but it is a great track nonetheless.  I love the way technology allows young artists without any special resources or connections like Asa Davis and Oz to put out tracks as high quality as any artist signed to an indie label.  Though Asa and Oz are only fresh out of high school, this track shows how they have refined their art to a point beyond most rappers who get a lot more attention than them.  Asa Davis released an extremely impressive first project earlier this year, Visible Thoughts, and Oz will be releasing his debut effort Genesis in the near future, both with NoNameMusicCo.  Both Asa and Oz have huge potential so I am excited to see where both of them and NoNameMusicCo will end up in a year.

If you couldn’t tell from the name of this post and the photo above, James Drake is a mixtape that mashes together songs from breakout musician James Blake and rapper Drake.  The mixtape was put together by Bombe and Mr. Caribbean, the later describes the mixtape as “a soundtrack for sippin Robitussun & Alize in an abandoned cathedral, covered in a velvet blanket with a sexy stranger on a dark night”.  Stream and download below.
