The Up-Turn

Any band that describes their sound as “everybody high fiving each other” better have some joy and energy to back it up.  Read the full article to see my opinion on these unlikely indie rockers.

Before starting this review it is important to know that Fang Island have four guitarists.  Any band boasting this number better have a reason for that, Fang Island absolutely do.  As you listen to Daisy over and over the complex interplay between the instruments begins to reveal itself.  Even if you don’t want to listen carefully to the instruments Daisy is a fragmented joy ride for the listener.  There are no choruses or verses in this song.  The band is constantly sprinting towards the next great idea afraid that their fresh melodies will stagnate.  This approach reminds me of avant garde musicians however Fang Island don’t approach their music as art-rock.  Instead, Fang Island produce a power-pop and stadium ready song that is easy to hum along to even when you have no idea where the band is heading.  Daisy is fun, fractured, awesome and actually takes a genre that is plagued with bands like Dragonforce and makes it great.
